The sport is sometimes also known by various names such as cage fighting, ultimate fighting and no-holds barred (NHB) fighting.

MMA is a full-contact combat sport and, as the name suggests, incorporates elements of various different martial arts and other combat sports.

The first fully-regulated MMA league in the United States began in Pennsylvania in 1980 but the state passed a bill banning the sport in 1983.

The sport was later re-introduced to the United States in 1993 by the promotion company Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). It was originally marketed as a real-life video fighting game, akin to the arcade games Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat.

Since then the sport has rapidly grown in popularity with fighters such as Conor McGregor becoming house-hold names.
