The sailfish is widely considered to the fastest fish in the ocean and can reach speeds approaching 70 miles an hour.
The sailfish gets its name from the large sail-like dorsal fin that extends almost the full length of its back. In addition to the large fin, the sailfish also has an elongated bill, similar to that of the swordfish.
A type of billfish – members also include the swordfish and the marlin – the sailfish is found in all of the Earth’s seas.
Sailfish are mostly blue-gray in color, with a white underbelly, and they feed on smaller fish and squid.
Sailfish can grow up to 11 feet long and their average lifespan is about 4 years.
