The American heavy metal band Metallica are one of the most successful groups of all time, selling well over 50 million albums in America alone. They have also gained critical acclaim, winning no less than 9 Grammy awards.

The band was formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by lead singer and guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich. Both are still with the band. The other two current band members are lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bass player Robert Trujillo.
